Symptoms

 The PDF-XChange Editor cannot find my scanner, but Adobe and several other applications can.

Cause

This is likely because 64-bit applications cannot work with 32-bit scanner drivers (normally TWAIN drivers). Please try scanning with Microsoft Paint, which is always a 64-bit application on 64-bit operating systems, and you will likely not be able to use scanner with Paint, either.

Adobe Reader is, as of this writing, exclusively a 32-bit application and no 64-bit application exists, which is why it can 'see' and and interact with 32-bit scanner drivers.

Resolution

As of Version 7, we now have encoded 32 bit algorithms so that the the Editor can now communicate with 32 bit scanner drivers. Please verify that you are running version 7 or later by going to Help > About. You can download the latest build at any time here: https://www.pdf-xchange.com/product/downloads

If you are using an older build, then you will need to do one (or more) of the following:

A) Download and use the Portable Editor for scanning:
https://www.pdf-xchange.com/PDFXEdit_Portable.zip

• The Portable Editor does not need to be installed. Once the *.zip folder has downloaded, simply right click and select "Extract All," then open the folder that is created (i.e. PDFXEdit_portable) and double left click the PDFXEdit.exe file inside to run the 32-bit Portable Editor.

B) Attempt to find 64-bit scanner drivers on the manufacturer's website, and install them.

C) If no 64-bit drivers (normally WIA drivers) are available, then contact the manufacturer and request that they provide 64-bit drivers.
